Nissan to trim global car lineup and boost use of AI driving tech
New Delhi: Nissan Motor has announced a major global overhaul of its business as it tries to recover from years of weak performance. The company said it will simplify its car lineup, expand its electric and hybrid offerings, and increase the use of artificial intelligence in most of its vehicles in the long term. CEO Ivan Espinosa said the plan is aimed at making the company “leaner and stronger” with a focus on profitability.
Nissan plans to reduce its global model lineup from 56 models to 45. The company says this will help it focus on stronger-selling and more profitable vehicles. It also plans to cut its global manufacturing operations and reduce its workforce by around 15% as part of its wider turnaround effort.
Nissan has set ambitious sales goals for 2030:
. 1 million vehicles per year in the United States
. 1 million vehicles per year in China
. 550,000 vehicles per year in Japan
The company hopes this focused strategy will help it compete more strongly with rivals like Toyota, Honda and Suzuki.

Nissan also announced several new and updated vehicles:
. A hybrid version of the Rogue SUV (called X-Trail in Japan)
. An electric version of the Juke
. A new compact car series in Japan starting from the 2028 financial year
. A refreshed luxury push for its Infiniti lineup
These changes show Nissan is expanding both electric and hybrid options while also refreshing older models.
Nissan plans to grow production and exports in different regions:
United States: Increase local production to 80% (from about 60%)
China: Use China as an export base for markets like Latin America, ASEAN and the Middle East
Japan: Boost domestic sales and introduce new compact cars
The company also aims to strengthen exports of models like its N7 electric sedan and Frontier Pro pickup truck.
Nissan said it will roll out advanced AI driving systems across about 90% of its vehicles over time. It is also working on autonomous driving technology for its new Elgrand minivan, expected by 2027.
In addition, Nissan is also partnering with:
. Uber Technologies
. Wayve
The goal is to test robotaxi services in Tokyo by late 2026.
Nissan will give a detailed update on its restructuring progress when it announces full-year results on May 13. The company recently reported a surprise quarterly profit but had earlier warned of a possible full-year loss, showing that its recovery is still in progress.
Nissan is trying to rebuild itself by:
. Cutting down its car lineup
. Investing heavily in electric and AI-powered vehicles
. Expanding in key global markets
. Partnering with tech firms for autonomous driving
The company hopes these changes will put it back on a stronger path in the global auto industry.
