Mumbai: Electric car manufacturer Tesla has formally entered India. Tesla's first showroom launched in Mumbai's BKC today on Tuesday. Tesla's showroom is open in Maker Maxity Mall of Bandra Kurla Complex in Mumbai, reports Dynamite News correspondent.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis inaugurated the Tesla showroom. He welcomed Tesla in the country and said, 'Tesla, Welcome to India'.

Tesla Will Not Manufacture EVs

There is a lot of discussion about Tesla's plans in India. However, Union Heavy Industries Minister HD Kumaraswamy has already made it clear that Tesla will not produce cars in India right now. Kumaraswamy said that 'Tesla currently wants to sell its cars in India and apart from this they have no other plans.'

Tesla has so far maintained silence on its plans. Media reports have quoted Tesla's website as saying that Tesla's Model Y electric car can be available in India at a starting price of Rs 60 lakh. It is worth noting that the price of this Model Y car is lower in the US and China.

Elon Musk Expressed His Desire

Earlier this year, Tesla started recruiting employees in India, after which discussions about Tesla's entry into the Indian market started. Tesla CEO Elon Musk has also previously expressed his desire to invest in India, but he described the high import tax imposed in India as the biggest problem.

However, the new EV policy has recently been announced by the Government of India, in which many facilities and low import tax have been offered to global EV car manufacturers. It is possible that Tesla may also enter the field of EV manufacturing in India in upcoming days.

Tesla To Work Hard In India

Tesla's second showroom in India can open in New Delhi at the end of this month. Tesla's entry into India is happening at a time when Tesla is facing tough challenges in its two most important markets, America and China.
Tesla's sales have declined in America and China. Tesla, which once had the highest market share in China, is now witnessing a steady decline in its market share and the company is facing tough competition from BYD Company.

Not only in China but all over the world, BYD Company is giving tough competition to Tesla. Now Tesla will have big expectations from India. However, the EV market in India is not that big yet, so Tesla will have to work hard to gain a foothold in India.
