Supreme Court
New Delhi: The Supreme Court said on Monday that if any kind of illegal process has been adopted by the Election Commission (ECI) during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) going on in Bihar, then the entire revision campaign can be cancelled.
The court made it clear that this decision will not be limited to Bihar only, but will be applicable to all SIR exercises going on across the country. During the hearing, the Supreme Court also said that it believes that the Election Commission is a constitutional institution and is following the law and rules.
Controversy again on Aadhar card
The court has fixed October 7 as the date for the next hearing and final debate on the case. The Supreme Court had ordered last Monday that during the ongoing voter list revision process in Bihar, Aadhar card should also be accepted as the 12th valid document.
The court had given this direction when complaints were received that the election officials had refused to accept Aadhaar. The bench of Justice Suryakant and Justice Joymala Bagchi rejected the objection of the Election Commission and said that Aadhaar is not a proof of citizenship, but it is definitely a proof of identity and residence. Therefore, it cannot be ignored.
Opposition is constantly raising questions
Opposition parties are constantly raising questions about this process going on in Bihar. They allege that the names of many real voters have been removed without proper verification. The opposition says that the Commission has fixed 11 documents for adding names, but has not included Aadhaar card even though it is the most common identity card.
