Chennai: The Madras High Court on Tuesday, January 20, reserved its order on an appeal filed by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) against a single judge’s directive to grant a U/A certificate to the Vijay-starrer Jana Nayagan. With the court withholding its decision, the fate of the film’s release continues to hang in the balance.

No date has yet been fixed for the pronouncement of the order. The development also puts to rest speculation that the film might release on January 26, as the certification issue remains unresolved.

Day-long hearing concludes before division bench

The appeal was heard by a division bench comprising Chief Justice Manindra Mohan Shrivastava and Justice G. Arul Murugan. The bench concluded a detailed hearing on the CBFC’s challenge, which questioned the earlier ruling directing the certification body to clear the film with a U/A rating.

The CBFC had approached the division bench after a single judge of the High Court, on January 9, ordered it to issue the certificate, enabling the film’s release. However, that order was subsequently stayed by the division bench, reopening the controversy and delaying the release plans.

Why Jana Nayagan landed in court

Jana Nayagan, which is reportedly actor Vijay’s final film before his full-time political entry, was initially slated for a theatrical release on January 9. The plans were stalled after the CBFC declined to grant certification, citing objections to certain aspects of the film.

Aggrieved by the delay, the film’s producers moved the Madras High Court, arguing that the certification process was being unduly prolonged. Acting on the plea, a single judge directed the CBFC to issue a censor certificate, prompting the board to file an appeal.

Supreme Court declines interim relief

Following the stay by the division bench, the producers escalated the matter to the Supreme Court. The apex court heard the plea on January 15 but declined to grant any interim relief, effectively sending the matter back to the Madras High Court for final consideration.

Senior law officers, including Additional Solicitor General A.R.L. Sundaresan and Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appeared for the CBFC during earlier stages of the proceedings and outlined the board’s objections to the single judge’s order.

What lies ahead

With the High Court reserving its order, the immediate future of Jana Nayagan remains uncertain. Until a final decision is delivered on the CBFC’s appeal, the film cannot proceed with its theatrical release, leaving fans awaiting clarity on when Vijay’s much-anticipated film will finally reach the big screen.
