The decision was communicated by the Department of Personnel and Training to the state government. This marks the second extension granted to Rao since his appointment as Chief Secretary in April 2025.

With the previous extension ending on March 31, the Telangana government sought a further extension citing administrative reasons. The Centre approved the request by relaxing provisions under the All India Services rules governing service tenure.
The latest order ensures Rao’s continuation in office through the end of June 2026.
A 1991-batch IAS officer, Rao has held several key positions in the state administration. He previously served as principal secretary in the finance department and was among the longest-serving finance secretaries in Telangana.
Meanwhile, the state government is expected to appoint CV Anand, currently serving as Home Secretary, as the next Director General of Police (DGP).
