How Is The CJI Appointed?
India has a fixed ceremonial order for the appointment of a Chief Justice. When the current CJI is about a month away from retirement, the Union Law Ministry requests him to recommend a successor. The current CJI recommends the name of the most senior judge in the Supreme Court's seniority order. After this process is formally completed, the new CJI is appointed with the President's approval. Thus, the country receives its new Chief Justice.
