EC orders immediate posting of IAS Officer K Manivasan as TN Home Secretary ahead of polls

Chennai: The Election Commission of India has taken a major administrative decision in view of the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. The Commission has directed the state government to appoint senior IAS officer K Manivasan as Home Secretary with immediate effect.

Immediate Implementation Order

The Commission has clarified in its order that this appointment should be implemented immediately and a compliance report should be submitted by 5 pm on April 11, 2026. This step has been taken to ensure fair and transparent election processes.

Officers to Stay Away from Election-Related Work

The Election Commission has also directed that officers who have been transferred  will not be involved in any election-related work. This arrangement will remain in effect until the elections are over.

Emphasis on Ensuring Fair Elections

This move by the Commission is considered important for maintaining administrative impartiality during the elections. The appointment to a key post like Home Secretary will help maintain law and order and control the election environment.

Election Commission of India has scheduled the Tamil Nadu Assembly Elections 2026 to be held in a single phase on April 23, 2026, with results set to be declared on May 4, 2026. The Model Code of Conduct is currently in force, and over 5.69 crore voters are registered, highlighting the scale of the electoral exercise and the importance of ensuring smooth, free and fair polling across the state.
