New Delhi: The Union Government has approved the reappointment of Solicitor General of India Tushar Mehta for another three-year term, ensuring continuity in one of the country's most important legal positions. The decision was cleared by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC), according to an official order issued on June 20.

Tushar Mehta will continue serving as the Solicitor General of India in the Supreme Court with effect from July 1, 2026, or until further orders, whichever is earlier.

Centre Retains Senior Legal Leadership

Along with Mehta's reappointment, the government has also extended the tenure of five Additional Solicitors General (ASGs) who represent the Centre before the Supreme Court.

The officers reappointed for another three-year term include Vikramjit Banerjee, K.M. Nataraj, Suryaprakash V. Raju, N. Venkataraman and Aishwarya Bhati. Their renewed appointments will take effect from the dates specified in the government notification.

The move reflects the government's decision to maintain continuity in its legal strategy and representation before the country's highest court.

Delhi High Court ASG Gets Extension

In a separate decision, the ACC also approved the reappointment of Chetan Sharma as Additional Solicitor General for the Delhi High Court. His tenure has been extended for six months from July 1, 2026, or until further orders.

Why The Decision Matters

The Solicitor General and Additional Solicitors General play a critical role in representing the Union Government in constitutional, policy and administrative matters before various courts. They assist the Attorney General and act as key legal advisors in high-profile cases involving the Centre.

The continuation of the existing legal team is expected to provide stability as several important cases remain pending before the Supreme Court and other judicial forums.

Government Notification Issued

The appointments were formally approved through an order issued by the Department of Personnel and Training under the Cabinet Appointments Committee, confirming the extension of the legal officers' tenures for the specified periods.
