Petrol and diesel rates jump in Delhi
New Delhi: Residents of Delhi woke up to a significant increase in fuel prices on Friday, as petrol and diesel rates rose by Rs 3 per litre. The hike comes amid mounting concerns over the global oil crisis triggered by ongoing tensions in West Asia.
Following the revision, petrol in Delhi is now priced at Rs 97.77 per litre, up from Rs 94.77, while diesel has increased to Rs 90.67 per litre from Rs 87.67. The price adjustment applies to all fuel variants, including regular and premium options.
This marks the end of a nearly four-year freeze on fuel price hikes across India, which had been in effect since April 2022. The only notable change during this period was a Rs 2 per litre reduction in March 2024 ahead of the Lok Sabha elections.
PM Modi Urges Citizens to Save Fuel
The increase comes shortly after Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged citizens to reduce petrol and diesel consumption in light of the global oil crisis linked to the US-Iran conflict.
In his appeal, he encouraged the use of public transport, metro travel, avoiding unnecessary trips, and adopting work-from-home practices wherever possible to ease pressure on energy supplies.
India imports over 85% of its crude oil, making domestic fuel prices highly sensitive to global market fluctuations. The ongoing conflict has raised concerns over the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial route for transporting crude oil, further influencing oil prices worldwide.
