Petrol, diesel sale restrictions to end on July 1 (Img: Agencies)
New Delhi: India will withdraw temporary restrictions on the sale of petrol and diesel from July 1, restoring normal fuel distribution after the government concluded that domestic supplies had stabilised following recent global disruptions.
The emergency measures were introduced earlier this year as a precaution against possible shortages caused by geopolitical tensions in West Asia and concerns over shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
The temporary restrictions had prevented commercial consumers from purchasing petrol and diesel from retail fuel outlets. Authorities had also imposed daily limits on diesel purchases to ensure uninterrupted availability for individual consumers.
The measures were intended to safeguard domestic fuel stocks during a period of uncertainty in global energy markets.
With the supply situation improving, the government has decided to lift the restrictions, allowing commercial consumers to resume normal fuel purchases from July 1.
The decision follows the government's earlier move to restore commercial LPG supplies to pre-restriction levels.
Temporary limits on commercial LPG distribution had been imposed to prioritise household cooking gas availability during the period of supply concerns. The restrictions had affected hotels, restaurants, bakeries and several industries, prompting many businesses to shift to alternative fuels such as diesel and coal.
Following an improvement in supply conditions, oil marketing companies have resumed full distribution of non-domestic packed LPG cylinders while partially relaxing restrictions on bulk LPG supplies.
Despite easing fuel restrictions, the government has retained its policy of promoting cleaner fuels. Commercial and industrial consumers that have already shifted to Piped Natural Gas (PNG) will not be allowed to revert to LPG, as authorities continue efforts to encourage wider adoption of PNG.
The latest decision signals growing confidence in India's fuel supply position as the government gradually rolls back emergency measures introduced during the recent global energy uncertainty.
