Karnataka: A strange incident has come to light in Bammalapura village, located in the buffer zone of Bandipur Tiger Reserve in the Chamarajanagar district of Karnataka. On September 9, 2025, angry villagers locked more than 10 field employees of the forest department in a huge cage kept to catch the tiger.
This incident happened when the villagers felt that the forest department was not showing seriousness in catching the tiger.
The villagers had seen tiger paw marks near their fields, after which the forest department had installed a large cage in the area so that the tiger could be caught. Some time ago, the sighting of a tiger in the field of Gangappa, and reports of cattle being killed also came to light. These incidents are from Gundlupet taluk of Chamarajanagar district.

The villagers alleged that they had complained several times about the presence of the tiger, but the department took action limited to only installing the cage. No search operation or combing was done.
When the tiger was sighted again on September 9 and the forest department team reached the village late, the angry villagers surrounded the staff and locked them in the same cage that was kept to catch the tiger.

After this incident came to light, wildlife activists and conservationists have reacted sharply. They said that such behavior demoralizes the field staff who work in difficult conditions. They warned that if this behavior is ignored at the political level, it can lead to more serious consequences in the future.
At present, senior forest officials have not been able to give any official statement on this incident. Given the seriousness of the incident, it is expected that a high-level investigation or response will come out soon.
This incident shows to what extent human-wildlife conflict has increased. On the one hand there is concern about the threat from wildlife; on the other hand there is also deep dissatisfaction among the local people about security.
