New Delhi: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Gurpreet Singh alias Gopi was shot dead in Punjab’s Ferozepur district after armed assailants allegedly chased his motorcycle and opened fire in Mamdot town.
Another person travelling with him, Harpreet Singh alias Happy, was seriously injured in the attack.
According to police, Gurpreet Singh and Harpreet Singh were travelling on a motorcycle when attackers allegedly followed them in a car and fired multiple rounds. The firing took place in the Mamdot area, triggering panic among local residents.
Gurpreet sustained critical injuries and was rushed to the hospital, where doctors declared him dead. Harpreet was also injured and was shifted for further treatment.
Ferozepur SSP Bhupinder Singh Sidhu said police are investigating an old dispute as a possible motive behind the killing. An election-related rivalry has emerged as a key angle in the preliminary probe.
Police have identified the suspected attackers and multiple teams have been formed to arrest them. Raids are being conducted at different locations as the investigation continues.
The shooting created fear in the area, with police teams reaching the spot soon after receiving information. Investigators are examining CCTV footage and gathering evidence to understand the exact sequence of events.
Police are also looking into whether the attack was linked to political rivalry or a personal dispute between the groups involved.
The murder of Gurpreet Singh has once again raised concerns over security and political violence in Punjab. As the investigation moves forward, police are focusing on identifying the motive behind the targeted attack and ensuring the arrest of those responsible.
