CM Dhami Takes Serious Note of Farmer Suicide in Haldwani Hotel
Dehradun: The suicide of farmer Sukhwant Singh, a resident of Kashipur, Uttarakhand, has caused a sensation in the state. 40-year-old Sukhwant Singh shot himself to death in a hotel room in the Gaula Par area of Haldwani. Following this tragic incident, the state government has taken the matter seriously and ordered a magisterial inquiry.
Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has directed Kumaon Commissioner Deepak Rawat to conduct a magisterial inquiry into the entire matter. The Chief Minister has clarified that the investigation must be fair and transparent, and that if negligence or misconduct is found at any level, strict action will be taken against the culprits.
Before committing suicide, Sukhwant Singh had made serious allegations of harassment and extortion against the Udham Singh Nagar police in a Facebook Live video. He cited a land scam worth approximately ₹4 crore (approximately $40 million), stating that pressure from the police and some property dealers had left him mentally broken. He also named senior police officers in the district in the video.
The deceased's father stated that his son had been under mental stress for a long time due to a land dispute and alleged fraud. The family alleges that fraud by property dealers and the pressure of continuous police action forced Sukhwant Singh to take such a step as suicide.
According to reports, Sukhwant Singh was staying at a hotel in Haldwani with his wife and son. Late at night, a commotion broke out in the room, after which his wife and son left. Shortly after, Sukhwant Singh shot himself with a weapon found in the room.
Kathgodam police have taken custody of the body and sent it for post-mortem. The investigation is centered on two main criteria: the Facebook Live video and the suicide note. Nainital SSP Manjunath TC confirmed that the suicide note has been recovered and the statements of the deceased's wife and son have been recorded.
According to the Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) of Uttarakhand Police, Kumaon Range IG Riddim Agarwal has also been instructed to conduct a detailed investigation into the entire matter and submit a report to Police Headquarters. The Chief Minister has also requested a detailed report from Chief Secretary Anand Bardhan and DGP Deepam Seth on the entire incident.
Chief Minister Dhami expressed his deepest condolences to the bereaved family and said that the state government stands with the family during this difficult time and will provide them with all possible assistance. He reiterated that bringing out the truth is the government's priority.
