A Delhi UPSC aspirant’s death, first thought to be a tragic fire, unravels a shocking tale of betrayal, secret recordings, and a deadly plot by his forensic student partner and ex-boyfriend. How did ghee, alcohol, and gas turn love into murder?
The murder was a revenge plot.
New Delhi: What initially seemed like a tragic fire accident in Delhi’s Gandhi Vihar has turned out to be a shocking case of premeditated murder. The Delhi Police have arrested three people including a 21-year-old forensic science student for allegedly killing a 32-year-old UPSC aspirant and then setting his apartment ablaze to destroy evidence.
The victim, Ramkesh Meena, was found charred in his fourth-floor apartment in Gandhi Vihar earlier this month. Investigators first suspected an air-conditioner blast or electrical short circuit. However, detailed forensic analysis and CCTV footage revealed that the blaze was deliberately triggered to cover up a murder.

According to police, the crime was orchestrated by Meena’s live-in partner Amrita Chauhan, a forensic science student, with the help of her former boyfriend Sumit Kashyap, 27, an LPG distributor, and their friend Sandeep Kumar, 29 all residents of Moradabad, Uttar Pradesh.
Amrita had been living with Meena since May. Trouble began when she discovered that Meena had secretly recorded her private videos and refused to delete them despite her repeated pleas. Feeling humiliated and betrayed, she turned to her ex-boyfriend Sumit for help.
Sumit, driven by anger and loyalty, decided to help Amrita “teach him a lesson.” Together with his friend Sandeep, the trio devised a plan that combined Amrita’s knowledge of forensic science and Sumit’s understanding of gas mechanics.
As per DCP (North) Raja Banthia, the accused travelled from Moradabad to Delhi on the night of October 5-6. CCTV footage showed two masked men entering Meena’s building around 2:30 am, followed shortly by a woman — later identified as Amrita.
Police said the three strangled and assaulted Meena before pouring ghee, oil, and alcohol on his body. Sumit then opened the valve of a gas cylinder to cause an explosion, intending to make the scene appear like an accidental fire. The trio locked the flat from inside using a small hole in the iron gate to mislead investigators and fled moments before the blast.
When firefighters arrived, they discovered Meena’s burnt body. Initial suspicions of an accident were dismissed after investigators noticed inconsistencies in the burn pattern and the presence of accelerants like ghee and oil.
CCTV footage and Amrita’s mobile location data placed her near the scene at the time of the incident. Her call records further tied her to Sumit and Sandeep. After several raids in Moradabad, Amrita was arrested on October 18, and during interrogation, she confessed to the crime.
Following her confession, police recovered a hard disk, laptops, two mobile phones, Meena’s shirt, and a trolley bag from the accused. Based on her disclosures, Sumit was arrested on October 21 and Sandeep on October 23. Both admitted their involvement during questioning.

Inspector Pankaj Tomar of Timarpur Police Station led the investigation, which combined forensic findings, call detail records, and local intelligence to unravel the case.
Police said Amrita’s background in forensic science and her fascination with crime web series helped her plan the murder meticulously and disguise it as an accident.
All three accused have been charged with murder, criminal conspiracy, and destruction of evidence. They are currently in police custody as the investigation continues.
