Pune: The investigation into the death of Pune-based realtor Ketan Agarwal has entered a crucial forensic phase, with Maharashtra Police preparing to conduct a gait analysis on accused Chetan Chaudhary.
Investigators believe the test could help establish whether Chaudhary is the person captured in CCTV footage near Lohagad Fort on the day of the incident.
According to investigators, CCTV footage recorded on June 18 shows a man wearing a hoodie walking near the foothills of Lohagad Fort. Police suspect the individual is Chetan Chaudhary, who allegedly covered his face to avoid identification.
To verify this, officers plan to recreate the footage by making Chaudhary wear a similar hoodie and walk along the same route under similar conditions. The recreated footage will then be compared with the original recording.
Gait analysis is a forensic technique that studies an individual's walking pattern. Experts compare characteristics such as stride length, posture, arm movement, leg motion and body balance to determine whether two videos show the same person.
The method is particularly useful when facial features are obscured or CCTV footage is unclear, as every individual tends to have distinctive movement patterns.
The case, initially registered as an accidental death after Agarwal allegedly fell from Lohagad Fort during a trek with his fiancée Siya Goyal, later turned into a suspected murder investigation.
Police have arrested Siya Goyal and Chetan Chaudhary, alleging they conspired to kill Agarwal. Investigators recently reconstructed the crime scene using a dummy and are also searching for the victim's missing passport while identifying the exact location of the alleged crime.
A local court has extended the police custody of both accused until July 3, allowing investigators more time to complete the probe.
