Kolkata: The RG Kar Medical College rape and murder case witnessed fresh political controversy on Friday after the victim’s mother, Ratna Debnath, made sharp allegations against former West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee following the suspension of three senior police officers over alleged lapses in the investigation.
Debnath, who was recently elected as BJP MLA from the Panihati Assembly constituency, accused Banerjee of shielding those responsible for the incident and claimed the truth behind the case would emerge if a deeper investigation was carried out.

Speaking to reporters, Debnath alleged that several influential individuals linked to the college administration had not been properly investigated. She also claimed that officials connected to the state government were aware of developments related to her daughter’s death.
She further alleged that the then health secretary Narayanswaroop Nigam and others associated with the institution should also come under the scope of investigation.
The remarks came hours after the West Bengal government suspended three senior police officers in connection with alleged irregularities and lapses in handling the case.
The suspended officers include former Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal, former Deputy Commissioner Indira Mukherjee and former Deputy Commissioner Abhishek Gupta.
The action was taken over alleged shortcomings in the investigation process following the rape and murder of the postgraduate trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College last year.

The case had triggered massive protests across West Bengal and drew national attention, with doctors and civil society groups demanding accountability and justice.
West Bengal chief minister Suvendu Adhikari also criticised the handling of the case and alleged that there were attempts to influence the victim’s family during the investigation process.
The RG Kar case continues to remain a major political and legal issue in the state, with multiple agencies probing various aspects linked to the incident and subsequent investigation.
