Pune: A death initially reported as a trekking accident at Lohagad Fort near Lonavala has turned into a murder investigation after Pune Rural Police arrested a young woman and her male friend for allegedly killing her fiancé, 26-year-old Ketan Vishal Agarwal.

Accident Claim Raised Doubts

The incident took place on June 18, when Ketan Agarwal and his fiancée, Siya Goyal, visited the historic fort. Between 10.30 am and 11 am, Goyal informed relatives and police that Agarwal had slipped and fallen from the hill. An accidental death report was first registered at Lonavala Rural Police Station.

However, Agarwal’s family suspected foul play. They told police that Ketan was an experienced trekker and questioned how he could have accidentally fallen from the fort.

Probe Exposes Alleged Conspiracy

Police then examined witness statements, technical evidence and other inputs. Investigators allegedly found that Goyal was in a relationship with Chetan Babulal Chaudhary, 22, a Kondhwa resident. According to police, Goyal was unwilling to marry Agarwal and considered him an obstacle to her relationship with Chaudhary.

Police said the two allegedly planned to eliminate Agarwal. Goyal took him to Lohagad Fort on the pretext of an outing, while Chaudhary was called there later. The duo then allegedly pushed Agarwal from the fort, causing his death.

Victim’s Father Questions Motive

Agarwal’s father said the families had completed wedding preparations, including plans for a ceremony in Udaipur. He said if Goyal did not want to marry Ketan, the family would have called off the wedding, and questioned why such an extreme step was taken.

Murder Case Registered

Pune Rural SP Sandip Singh Gill said the circumstances appeared suspicious from the beginning, prompting police to investigate personal and financial angles. Police have registered a murder case against Goyal and Chaudhary under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

Both accused have been taken into custody and are being produced before court. The case has shocked Pune, as a young groom-to-be’s death at a popular trekking destination allegedly turned out to be a pre-planned murder. Police said further investigation is under way to establish the sequence of events, motive, and any additional role of others.
