A 28-year-old doctor in Satara committed suicide, citing repeated sexual harassment, political pressure, and inaction by authorities. Investigation and political attention follow as authorities seek justice for systemic failures and rising crimes against women.
Satara Doctor Suicide
Satara: A 28-year-old female doctor working at the Phaltan sub-district hospital in Satara district committed suicide by hanging herself in a hotel room late Thursday night. This tragic incident has given rise to serious allegations, which she detailed in her suicide note.
The female doctor wrote her suicide note in two places:
Note on her palm: She wrote serious allegations against Police Sub-Inspector Gopal Badne and a software engineer, Prashant Bankar, on her left palm.
Four-page note: In a longer note found later, she named a Member of Parliament (MP) and two of his associates.
According to the allegations, Sub-Inspector Badne and Prashant Bankar had repeatedly subjected her to rape, sexual harassment, and mental torture for the past five months.
The most tragic aspect of this case is that the female doctor repeatedly pleaded for help and protection, but no one listened to her. She had written letters of complaint to everyone from the DCP (Deputy Commissioner of Police) to her senior officers.
She had demanded action from the police, but despite complaining two or three times, no action was taken. In her note, she wrote, "If something happens to me, who will be responsible?" This sentence reflects her helplessness and despair.
The family members have alleged that she was being pressured to prepare fake medical reports at the hospital. She was asked to create fitness certificates and post-mortem reports without any actual patients.
The mention of an MP's name in her suicide note indicates that she was also under political pressure.
The investigation conducted after her death has revealed several shocking facts:
Last phone call: The police have learned that before committing suicide, the female doctor had spoken to the accused, Prashant Bankar, on the phone and also exchanged messages with him.
Interestingly, she was living as a tenant in Prashant's father's flat. Fugitives: The main accused, Police Sub-Inspector Gopal Badne and software engineer Prashant Bankar, are absconding. Police teams are searching for them.
Immediate Action: Considering the seriousness of the allegations, Police Sub-Inspector Gopal Badne has been suspended.
This case has also caused a stir in political circles.
Chief Minister's Intervention: Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis immediately took notice of the case and ordered the Satara Superintendent of Police to conduct a swift investigation. He directed that strict action be taken against all the accused.
Opposition's Attack: Congress leader Vijay Wadettiwar said, "When those who are supposed to provide security become the perpetrators of exploitation, where will justice come from?" He demanded strict action.
Women's Commission's Role: The Chairperson of the Maharashtra State Commission for Women, Rupali Chakankar, has also taken cognizance of the matter and ordered the Satara police to take strict action. She clearly stated that no one will be spared.
This case has become a horrific example of systemic failure, institutional apathy, and the rising crimes against women. The tragic death of an educated and independent doctor raises the question of how an ordinary citizen will get justice when the very institutions meant to protect them fail. Now, all eyes are on this investigation to see whether the culprits are brought to justice or not.
