New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Tuesday showed concern over a news report claiming that a child goes missing every eight minutes in India. The Top Court described it a serious issue.

A bench of Justices BV Nagarathna and R Mahadevan stated that the adoption process in India is complex and urged the Central Government to simplify the system.

During the hearing, Justice Nagarathna orally remarked, "I read in the newspaper that a child goes missing every eight minutes in India. I don't know whether this is true or not. But it is a serious issue."

During the hearing, Additional Solicitor General Aishwarya Bhati, representing the Centre, sought six weeks to appoint a nodal officer to handle missing child cases. However, the Supreme Court declined to grant six weeks and directed the Additional Solicitor General to complete the process by December 9.

The Supreme Court remarked that because the adoption process is stringent, it is natural for it to be violated and people resort to illegal means to have children.
