Kolkata: A fire suddenly broke out in a main naphtha-carrying pipeline at the Haldia Refinery in West Bengal on Tuesday morning, leaving several workers with burn injuries. The injured workers were immediately admitted to the hospital, where their condition is reported to be critical.
Eyewitnesses stated that the incident occurred in the morning while naphtha was being supplied within the refinery. Suddenly, fierce flames erupted from the pipeline, causing burn injuries to workers present nearby.
Locals and factory officials present at the scene immediately rescued the injured workers and admitted them to Haldia Sub-Divisional Hospital, where a team of doctors is treating them. Several of the injured are reported to be in critical condition. However, factory officials have not yet disclosed the cause of the accident.
Factory officials reported that the fire in the naphtha pipeline broke out between 4:00 AM and 4:30 AM. Workers present near the pipeline were injured in the incident and have been admitted to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Preliminary information suggests that the incident may have occurred near an unauthorized naphtha theft point located in the vicinity of the plant. Naphtha is a highly flammable hydrocarbon, and the company has consistently warned locals against unauthorized access to or handling of petroleum products due to serious safety risks.
Meanwhile, no information regarding the specific cause of the pipeline fire is available yet. A technical team is conducting a thorough investigation into the matter.
