Kolkata: West Bengal Police on Monday arrested Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader and former Falta by-election candidate Jahangir Khan near the India-Nepal border in connection with an alleged extortion case. Khan had reportedly been absconding for several days before law enforcement agencies tracked him down in North Bengal.
According to officials, the arrest was carried out after coordinated efforts between district police teams, local intelligence units and border police personnel.
Police sources said Jahangir Khan had been deliberately avoiding arrest while investigations into multiple criminal complaints against him were underway. He was eventually located near the northern border region and immediately taken into custody.

After his arrest, Khan was brought to a nearby police station for questioning. Officials said investigators are now examining whether other individuals were involved in the alleged extortion network.
The case reportedly involves allegations of threats and illegal money collection from local businessmen and traders. Multiple complaints had allegedly been filed against Khan over the past few months, prompting a wider investigation by law enforcement agencies.
Officials stated that the probe is still ongoing and additional charges or arrests cannot be ruled out at this stage.
Jahangir Khan has been considered an influential regional TMC figure in parts of South Bengal and North Bengal political circles. Following his arrest, the matter quickly turned politically sensitive.
TMC leaders have claimed that the cases against Khan are politically motivated, while police officials have maintained that the investigation is being conducted strictly according to legal procedures.
Before his arrest, Khan had reportedly approached the Calcutta High Court seeking protection from coercive action in the case. However, the High Court later refused to extend relief and withdrew the interim protection from arrest that had previously been granted to him.
Following his detention, Khan is expected to be produced before a district magistrate, who will decide the next course of legal action. Investigators may seek further custody for extended questioning in connection with the extortion allegations.
