In a bold election move, Tejashwi Yadav promises permanent Rs 30,000 jobs for all ‘Jeevika Didis’ in Bihar. Could this unprecedented pledge reshape women’s empowerment and the state’s political landscape ahead of 2025 polls?
Tejashwi Yadav big announcement ahead of elections.
Patna: Ahead of the Bihar Assembly elections, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Tejashwi Yadav on Wednesday announced a key poll promise aimed at empowering women in the state. He stated that if the Mahagathbandhan comes to power, all ‘Jeevika Didis’ will be given permanent government jobs with a monthly salary of Rs 30,000.
Speaking at a press conference in Patna, Yadav emphasized that this move is aimed at correcting the perceived injustices done to these women workers under the current government.
Tejashwi Yadav criticized the incumbent Nitish Kumar-led government, claiming that the previous financial assistance provided to women under the Bihar government was merely a loan of Rs 10,000. “It was announced before the elections and will be recovered later. This is not real empowerment,” Yadav said.
He asserted that his party’s approach would be more substantial and permanent, rather than temporary handouts that place a financial burden on the beneficiaries.
Reiterating the RJD’s earlier poll promise, Yadav stated that in families without any government job, at least one member will be provided a government job. He added that this initiative would be implemented within 20 days of the Mahagathbandhan forming the government.
RJD to contest 143 seats, Congress 61.
“This policy is not only about employment; it is about dignity and security for families that have long been marginalized,” Yadav said.
Highlighting the demand of the Jeevika Didis, Yadav said, “All of you are aware that injustice was done to the Jeevika Didis under this government. We have decided we will also increase their salary to Rs 30,000 per month. This is not an ordinary announcement.”
The move, according to Yadav, is expected to strengthen the financial independence of these women, many of whom work in rural development, health, and education-related roles under the Jeevika scheme, which has been operational across Bihar for years.
The announcement comes at a time when Bihar is preparing for state assembly elections in 2025, and promises related to women’s empowerment and employment are likely to influence rural voters. Analysts note that the Mahagathbandhan is attempting to consolidate support among women and low-income families through such targeted schemes.
Bihar Elections: Mahagathbandhan faces internal rift; Seat-sharing disputes threaten alliance unity
With Nitish Kumar and his Janata Dal (United) facing criticism over job and financial policies, the RJD’s promise could become a key electoral issue, particularly in constituencies with a high number of Jeevika workers.
Tejashwi Yadav’s announcement marks a significant poll promise aimed at strengthening the role of women in Bihar’s workforce by offering permanent government jobs and a salary hike to Rs 30,000 per month. Coupled with the pledge to provide at least one government job per jobless family, the RJD is positioning itself as a pro-women, pro-employment alternative ahead of the Bihar elections 2025.
