Next Five Years Critical: Nitish Kumar’s Agenda for Jobs and Growth
Patna: A new government led by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has taken office in Bihar. While the previous government took some positive steps in education, health, infrastructure, and women's empowerment, fulfilling these commitments will now be a major challenge for the new government. A roadmap is being prepared at the administrative level to implement its election promises.
Political analysts say the new government will need to take concrete steps to accelerate Bihar's economic and social development. Issues such as migration, employment, education, law and order, and women's empowerment are particularly important. The government will work on a stable and development-oriented model, focusing on infrastructure, employment, and welfare schemes.
Employment and migration are major issues in the state. They emerged as a major concern during the elections. The Bihar government has promised 10 million jobs. According to reports, at least one member of two out of every three households in the state works in other states. Currently, 54% of workers are engaged in agriculture, while only 5% work in the manufacturing sector, which is lower than the national average of 11%.
Lack of quality education and opportunities has led meritorious students to pursue studies outside Bihar. According to former Vice Chancellor Dr. Rasbihari Singh, Bihar has made progress in education and infrastructure, but per capita income is only one-third of the national average. The dropout rate in schools is also a matter of concern. The new government will need to work towards quality education, skill development, and increasing employment opportunities.
Chief Minister Nitish Kumar is credited with ending jungle raj in Bihar. However, according to National Crime Records Bureau data, the crime rate has increased between 2015 and 2024. In 2023, the crime rate increased by 1.63%. The new government will not compromise on law and order.
The NDA has made five major welfare promises for the poor under the Panchamrit Guarantee: free ration, 125 units of free electricity, free healthcare up to Rs 5 lakh, construction of 5 million permanent houses, and social security pensions. Women's empowerment will also be given priority, with the goal of making 10 million women "Lakhpati Didi" (Lakhpati Didi) earning more than Rs 1 lakh annually.
