A R Rehman on Diljeet Movie
Mumbai: Oscar-winning composer AR Rahman has weighed in on the ongoing discussion surrounding Imtiaz Ali's latest film Main Vaapas Aaunga. The musician reacted to a viral social media post that sarcastically labelled the film "anti-national" for portraying Pakistan without the usual stereotypes seen in many mainstream films.
The Partition drama has been receiving positive reviews and strong audience appreciation since its release, with viewers praising its emotional storytelling and human-centric narrative.
A social media post that caught widespread attention read, "Anti-National? Movie dares to show Pakistan without terrorists and secret agents?"
Rahman shared the post on his Instagram story and responded with a laughing emoji, seemingly endorsing the satirical nature of the comment.
The post humorously described a moviegoer expecting an espionage thriller involving India-Pakistan conflict but instead finding a heartfelt drama centered on ordinary people and human relationships.
The viral caption suggested that the viewer was surprised to see Pakistani characters portrayed as regular human beings rather than spies or terrorists, a common trope in several cross-border narratives.
The post further joked that the audience member left the film with a new perspective—that normal lives and emotions exist across borders despite the stereotypes often depicted in cinema.
Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Imtiaz Ali, Main Vaapas Aaunga stars Diljit Dosanjh, Sharvari, and Vedang Raina in pivotal roles. Vedang portrays the younger version of a character played by veteran actor Naseeruddin Shah.
Set against the backdrop of the 1947 Partition of British India, the film blends the trauma of displacement with a poignant love story. The narrative explores themes of identity, belonging, memory, and human resilience during one of the most turbulent periods in the subcontinent's history.
With strong word-of-mouth and growing audience appreciation, the film continues to spark conversations both online and offline, particularly for its nuanced portrayal of people affected by Partition.
