New Delhi: Karwa Chauth 2026 will be celebrated on Thursday, October 29, with married women observing traditional rituals and prayers for their husbands' long lives and family well-being. The festival is marked by fasting, evening worship, recitation of the vrat katha and moon worship before the fast is broken.
According to the supplied Drik Panchang details, the puja muhurat is from 5:52 PM to 7:07 PM. The fasting period is listed as 6:23 AM to 8:45 PM, with moonrise expected at 8:45 PM. Chaturthi tithi begins at 1:06 AM and ends at 10:09 PM on October 29. These timings are for Manwat, India, and may differ by location.
Prepare a puja thali with a karwa filled with water, sieve, diya, ghee, cotton wicks, roli, kumkum, rice, turmeric, flowers, incense, sweets and fruits. A vessel for offering arghya to the moon and images or idols of Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvati and Lord Ganesha are also commonly used. Sargi is traditionally eaten before sunrise.
The day begins with sargi, followed by fasting. Many devotees observe a nirjala vrat, avoiding food and water until moonrise. In the evening, women perform puja, pray for family prosperity and listen to the traditional Karwa Chauth vrat katha.
After sighting the moon, women offer water and prayers, then view the moon and their husbands through a sieve. The fast is traditionally concluded with water and food. Fasting customs vary. Anyone who is pregnant, unwell or taking medication should prioritise medical advice over prolonged fasting without water.
