New Delhi: Today's fast-paced and stressful lifestyle has had a serious impact on people's health. Serious diseases like cancer are now rapidly affecting not only the elderly but also the youth. Experts believe that a major reason for this is improper eating and a wrong lifestyle.

Cancer specialist Dr Rekha Arya says that during treatment, it is not enough for cancer patients to depend only on medicines; a proper diet is equally important. Many times, family members feed the patient such things in love and care, which can worsen their condition.

Keep distance from these things.

Processed And Packaged Food

Things like chips, namkeen, biscuits, and instant noodles may be easily available and taste delicious, but the preservatives, trans fats, and artificial colours present in them can have a poisonous effect on the body. These substances weaken the immunity of the cancer patient and can prevent the body from recovering.

Sugar-Rich Things

Excessive sweets and refined sugar present in cakes, bakery items and sweet juices can accelerate the growth of cancer cells. Research shows that cancer cells respond quickly to glucose and grow faster. Therefore, sugar intake should be minimised or stopped altogether.

Milk And Dairy Products

Milk may be good for general health, but in hormone-sensitive cancers (such as breast and prostate cancer), dairy products can cause inflammation and hormonal imbalance. In such a situation, plant-based milk or dairy-free options are better.

Too Much Fibre

During chemotherapy or radiation, when digestion becomes weak, high-fibre foods (such as peeled fruits and whole grains) can be difficult to digest. At this time, the patient should be given light, digestible and easily digestible food.

Herbal Supplements Without Doctor's Advice

Even though herbal supplements are natural, some ingredients may react with chemotherapy drugs. This can affect both side effects and the effect of the medicine.

What To Do?

  • Consult a doctor or dietician. Follow the diet based on advice.
  • Maintain hydration and eat fruits and vegetables after washing them thoroughly.
  • Before starting to consume anything new, consult a doctor.
