Dengue cases are rising this season, but do you know the early warning signs? Fever, joint pain, or a rash could be more than a flu. Catch it early- ignoring these symptoms could be dangerous.
Warning Signs of Dengue You Must Not Ignore
New Delhi: As dengue cases surge across several Indian cities with the return of the post-monsoon season, doctors are warning the public to stay alert for the early signs of the mosquito-borne viral infection. Health officials say timely diagnosis and treatment can make the difference between a mild infection and a life-threatening illness.
Dengue, transmitted by the Aedes aegypti mosquito, typically spikes during and after the monsoon when stagnant water becomes a breeding ground. In recent weeks, hospitals in Delhi, Mumbai, and several northern states have reported a sharp rise in suspected dengue cases.
Health experts attribute the rise to unseasonal rains, poor waste management, and a lack of preventive measures. “We are seeing entire families being affected at once,” said Dr Gussain, an infectious disease specialist. “Early detection is key to preventing complications.”

Dengue often begins like a common viral fever, which makes it easy to overlook. However, the first warning signs usually appear 3–7 days after a mosquito bite. These include:
Sudden high fever
Severe headache
Pain behind the eyes
Joint and muscle pain
Nausea and vomiting
Skin rash appearing after two to five days of fever
If these symptoms persist or worsen, it’s crucial to seek medical attention. Many patients assume it’s just viral flu and delay testing, which can lead to severe dengue or dengue hemorrhagic fever.
Doctors caution that the most dangerous phase often begins after the fever subsides — when platelet counts may drop sharply. Warning signs of severe dengue include:
Persistent vomiting
Abdominal pain
Bleeding gums or nose
Fatigue and restlessness
Cold or clammy skin
“Don’t wait for the fever to break before you visit a doctor,” advised doctor Gussain. “A simple blood test can confirm dengue and help monitor platelet levels before the condition worsens.”

There is currently no specific antiviral treatment for dengue. Management focuses on maintaining hydration, controlling fever, and monitoring blood counts. Preventing mosquito bites remains the most effective defense.
Using mosquito repellents and nets
Wearing long-sleeved clothing
Keeping water containers covered
Cleaning coolers and flower pots weekly
Ensuring there’s no stagnant water near homes
Municipal bodies have also urged residents to cooperate with anti-mosquito drives and report potential breeding sites.
With rising temperatures and unpredictable rainfall, dengue transmission is expected to remain high over the next few months. Being aware of the early symptoms and acting promptly can help prevent complications.
As doctors emphasize: “Don’t ignore the warning signs dengue caught early can be treated easily. But if neglected, it can turn fatal within days.”
