New Delhi: Obesity is becoming a major health issue in India. Around 250 million people are affected, but only about two lakh patients are currently using GLP-1 treatments. This is less than 0.1% of those who could benefit. Experts say the main problem is not cost, but lack of awareness. Many people still don’t fully understand that obesity is a serious medical condition that needs proper treatment.

What Are GLP-1 Drugs?

GLP-1 drugs work by copying a natural hormone in the body. They help control blood sugar and reduce appetite, which leads to weight loss. Semaglutide is one of the most popular medicines in this group. While cheaper generic versions are expected soon, awareness and proper guidance remain bigger challenges than price.

Growing Awareness and Better Access

Earlier, even doctors in India had limited knowledge about these treatments. But now, awareness is improving. Healthcare professionals are beginning to see that these drugs help not just with diabetes, but also with weight and heart health.

To improve access, companies have reduced prices, partnered with Indian pharma firms, and worked with telehealth platforms. These steps aim to make treatment available to more people across the country.

New and Advanced Treatments

New versions of these medicines are already being developed. Higher-dose injections and oral options are available in some countries. Another upcoming treatment combines two hormones to improve weight loss and blood sugar control.

In clinical trials, this combination helped patients lose more weight compared to Semaglutide alone. Future drugs are also being designed to target multiple pathways in the body for even better results.

Safety and Responsible Use

With more options entering the market, there are concerns about misuse. India’s drug regulator has warned against misleading promotions of weight-loss medicines.

Doctors strongly advise that these drugs should only be taken with a prescription. Self-medication can be harmful. Treatment should always include a healthy diet, regular exercise, and medical supervision.

The Way Forward

Experts believe that increasing awareness, proper education, and responsible use of medicines are key to tackling obesity in India. With better understanding and access, more people can benefit from effective and safe treatment options.
