New Delhi: The Delhi Gymkhana Club has approached the Delhi High Court challenging the Centre’s directive asking the club to vacate its 27.3-acre premises at Safdarjung Road in Lutyens’ Delhi by June 5.

The matter was mentioned before Justice Avneesh Jhingan by senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi, who sought an urgent hearing on behalf of the club. The court agreed to hear the plea on May 26.

Centre Invokes ‘Public Purpose’ Clause

The eviction notice was issued by the Land and Development Office (L&DO) on May 22. The government cited Clause 4 of the original lease agreement, which allows the Centre to reclaim the land if it is required for a “public purpose.”

According to the notice, the land is needed for strengthening defence infrastructure, governance-related facilities and other critical public security requirements.

The property is located near the Prime Minister’s residence and other high-security establishments in central Delhi. The notice further stated that upon re-entry, the entire land parcel along with buildings, lawns, structures and fittings would vest with the President of India through the L&DO.

Club Seeks Clarification From Government

Following the Centre’s order, the General Committee of the Delhi Gymkhana Club held an emergency meeting to discuss the issue and its possible impact on members and employees.

In a statement, the club said it had decided to seek urgent clarification from the government on several operational and administrative concerns.

The committee also requested an immediate meeting with officials from the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs to discuss the matter further. Club authorities said ensuring uninterrupted functioning and continuity of operations remains their immediate priority.

Historic Institution Faces Uncertain Future

The Delhi Gymkhana Club traces its origins to the Imperial Delhi Gymkhana Club, established in 1913 shortly after the British shifted the capital from Calcutta to Delhi.

Originally catering to British civil servants and military officers during the colonial period, the institution was renamed after Independence in 1947 by dropping the word “Imperial.”

Most of the club’s existing buildings were constructed during the 1930s. The High Court hearing on May 26 is expected to determine the next course of action regarding the Centre’s eviction directive.
