New Delhi: The effects of rising pollution are no longer limited to the lungs and heart; they are also having a serious impact on the health of unborn babies. Several recent studies have warned that exposure to fine particulate matter (PM2.5, PM10), nitrogen dioxide, and other toxic elements in polluted air during pregnancy can affect fetal development. When we spoke with Nature's IVF expert and gynecologist, Dr. Archana Dhawan Bajaj, for more information on this topic, she revealed some startling facts.

Gynecologist Dr. Archana explains, "Fine particulate matter reaches the placenta through the mother's lungs and bloodstream, affecting the development of fetal organs. Long-term exposure to such particles is associated with premature delivery, low birth weight babies, and impaired neurological development." She shared more information; let's explore this article.

What does the WHO say?

The doctor explained that according to the WHO's 2023 report, air pollution causes approximately 600,000 newborn deaths worldwide each year. Most of these cases occur in countries where the air quality index consistently remains in the poor category. In India, pollution levels are most dangerous during the months of November and December, further increasing the risk for pregnant women.

How does pollution affect the fetus?

According to the doctor, "When pregnant women constantly breathe polluted air, it increases oxidative stress and inflammation in their bodies. This can hinder fetal growth and increase the risk of asthma, allergies, or heart disease in the child in the future." Therefore, you should take extreme precautions to ensure a healthy baby.

The doctor explained how to protect yourself?

  • Pregnant women should stay indoors as much as possible during polluted days.
  • Use N95 masks when going out.
  • Use air purifiers and plants (such as money plants and aloe vera) at home.
  • Eat a nutritious diet that includes antioxidants (such as vitamins C, E, and iron).
  • Avoid walking in the early morning or late evening when pollution levels are high.

How to Protect Your Baby and Unborn Baby from Pollution

The doctor further states that "protecting your baby from pollution is as important as eating right and getting regular checkups. Both society and the government must work together to formulate policies that ensure clean air for the future generation." Pollution has now become not just an environmental issue, but also a health issue for the future generation. If timely action is not taken, this "invisible toxin" can endanger the future of children.
