World Mental Health Day 2025: Are we finally valuing mental health like physical health?

New Delhi: World Mental Health Day 2025 comes at a time when mental health is finally stepping out of the shadows and into mainstream conversations. From policy reforms to corporate initiatives, and from classrooms to social media, mental wellbeing is no longer being treated as a luxury—it’s increasingly being seen as a fundamental part of overall health.

This year’s global theme, “Mental Health is a Universal Right,” urges governments and institutions to build accessible, inclusive mental health systems. But the bigger question remains: is the world truly ready to treat mental health with the same seriousness as physical health?

From Silence to Conversation

A decade ago, discussions around mental health were still largely confined to clinical circles or hushed whispers. In 2025, mental health is part of pop culture, education, and even politics. Celebrities, athletes, and influencers are sharing their mental health journeys, helping to break long-standing stigma.

In India, initiatives like Tele MANAS (a national mental health helpline) have seen increased usage, especially among youth and working professionals. Meanwhile, countries like the UK, Australia, and Canada have expanded public healthcare to include free or subsidised therapy, recognising that mental health support needs to be proactive, not reactive.

Corporate and Campus Mental Health: Progress or PR?

The workplace has become a major battleground for mental health reform. In 2025, more companies offer in-house therapy services, flexible work policies, and mental health days. However, critics argue that many organisations still treat mental health initiatives as checkbox activities rather than meaningful interventions.

Similarly, educational institutions are now integrating mental wellness into school curriculums. Universities have expanded counselling departments and peer support programs. But the rising cases of academic burnout and anxiety suggest that much more is needed than just token changes.

Tech and Therapy: A Double-Edged Sword

The mental health tech space has exploded in recent years, with AI-driven therapy apps, mood trackers, and meditation platforms seeing widespread adoption. While this has helped democratise access to support, concerns remain about privacy, effectiveness, and the need for human connection.

Experts caution that while technology can complement mental health care, it should not replace professional help, especially for serious mental health conditions.

WHO reports 1 in 8 people globally suffer from mental health issues.

Challenges Still Loom Large

Despite progress, millions worldwide still lack access to quality mental health care due to cost, distance, or social stigma. Rural populations, marginalised communities, and low-income groups often fall through the cracks. The World Health Organization (WHO) reports that globally, nearly one in eight people live with a mental health condition, yet funding and infrastructure remain inadequate in most countries.

The Road Ahead

The growing awareness and conversation around mental health in 2025 marks significant progress. But closing the gap between awareness and action remains the next big challenge.

World Mental Health Day is not just a date on the calendar—it’s a reminder that mental wellbeing should be treated with the same urgency and care as physical illness. Until that becomes the global standard, the journey toward true mental health equity continues.
