

A powerful 6.3 magnitude earthquake struck southeastern Afghanistan Sunday night, killing at least nine people and injuring over 25. Tremors were also felt in Pakistan. The Taliban administration has expressed grief and dispatched rescue teams to the affected eastern provinces.

New Delhi: A massive earthquake struck the southeastern areas of Afghanistan on Sunday night. According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the magnitude of this earthquake was measured at 6.3 on the Richter scale.
The incident occurred at around 12:47 am, when first a tremor of 6.0 magnitude came, and soon after that another powerful tremor of 6.3 magnitude was felt. Due to this, there has been massive destruction in the area, and people are still in panic.

Huge loss of life and property
So far, nine people have been confirmed dead, and more than 25 people have been injured due to this natural disaster. Naqibullah Rahimi, spokesman for the Public Health Department of Afghanistan's Nangarhar province, gave this information.
All the injured have been admitted to nearby hospitals for immediate treatment. The tremors of the earthquake were clearly felt not only in Afghanistan but also in neighboring Pakistan.

Taliban administration's response
Taliban government spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid has expressed grief over the incident. He issued a message through the social media platform 'X' (formerly Twitter) saying that the earthquake has caused heavy loss of life and property in the eastern provinces.
He also informed us that local officials are engaged in helping and rescue operations of the victims. Relief and rescue teams from the central government and nearby provinces are being rapidly sent to the affected areas so that relief can be provided to the people as soon as possible.
Afghanistan: A vulnerable area for earthquakes
The geography of Afghanistan makes it highly vulnerable to earthquakes. Earlier this year, earthquakes of 4.7 magnitude occurred on May 28 and 5.9 magnitude on April 16. However, there was no report of loss of life and property in those incidents.
