Kathmandu: Balendra Shah, widely known as Balen, was sworn in as Nepal’s youngest Prime Minister on Friday, marking a significant political shift in the Himalayan nation. At just 35, he steps into office following a decisive mandate in the recent general elections.

He was appointed by President Ram Chandra Paudel after his party, the Rastriya Swatantra Party, secured nearly two-thirds of the seats in the House of Representatives.

Landslide victory signals public anger

The overwhelming electoral win reflects deep public frustration with Nepal’s traditional political parties. Years of instability, governance challenges and corruption allegations had eroded voter trust, paving the way for a political outsider like Shah.

His party’s strong performance in the March 5 elections underscores a demand for change and accountability in governance.

From engineer and rapper to national leader

Shah’s journey to the top post has been unconventional. A structural engineer by profession, he first gained popularity as a rapper before transitioning into politics. His rise accelerated after he was elected mayor of Kathmandu, where his governance style earned attention.

His appeal among younger voters and urban populations played a crucial role in his national success.

Youth movement and rising influence

Shah emerged as a prominent voice during the youth-led protests in September that led to the fall of the previous government. Although not directly involved, he publicly supported the largely Gen Z-led movement, aligning himself with calls for reform.

The protests, which turned violent at times, highlighted growing unrest among citizens demanding systemic change.

Tradition meets politics at oath ceremony

The swearing-in ceremony blended governance with tradition, featuring Hindu rituals, chanting by priests and Buddhist lamas, and auspicious timing aligned with Ram Navami.

Astrological and numerological considerations influenced the schedule, reflecting Nepal’s cultural fabric where religion plays a significant role in public life.

Challenges ahead

As Prime Minister, Shah faces the complex task of stabilising Nepal’s political landscape while addressing economic concerns and restoring public trust. Expectations remain high as the country looks toward a new era of leadership.
