Advisory issued due to heatwave
Dhaka: As heatwave sweeps large parts of Bangladesh, the South Asian country has issued an emergency advisory urging people to remain cautious and take protective measures.
In an advisory, the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) under the Ministry of Health, warned to avoid exposure to heat and sun, especially for the elderly, people with disabilities, outdoor workers, those with obesity, and those suffering of chronic illnesses, particularly heart disease and high blood pressure.
It called to avoid unnecessary physical exertion both indoors and outdoors. The DGHS further urged people to monitor their urine color, noting that dark yellow urine indicates dehydration and the need to increase fluid intake.
It also recommended bathing multiple times a day, if possible, as a way to lower body temperature.
Bangladesh is currently grappling with one of the most severe heatwaves in recent years.
Mercury rose to 42 degrees Celsius on Sunday in the country's Chuadanga district, some 215 km west of Dhaka, this year's highest temperature, according to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department.
Bangladesh's capital Dhaka experienced its hottest day of the season on Saturday, with temperatures soaring to 40.1 degrees Celsius.
To stay safe during a heatwave, prioritize staying cool and hydrated. Wear loose, light-colored clothing, seek shade, and take cool showers or baths. Drink plenty of fluids, even if not thirsty, and avoid alcohol and caffeine, which can worsen dehydration.
Here's a more detailed breakdown of precautions
Dress for the heat: Wear loose, lightweight, light-colored clothing to allow air circulation and reduce heat absorption.
Seek shade: Find shade or stay indoors during the hottest part of the day (generally between 12 pm and 3 pm).
Stay indoors in air conditioning: If possible, spend time in an air-conditioned space.
Take cool showers or baths: Cool water can help lower your body temperature.
Use fans: Utilize fans to circulate air and provide some relief.
Keep your home cool: Close curtains and blinds during the day, and open windows at night for ventilation.
Drink plenty of water: Aim to drink water regularly throughout the day, even if you don't feel thirsty.
Replace lost electrolytes: Consider drinking sports drinks or electrolyte-rich drinks to replenish salt and minerals lost through sweat.
Avoid alcohol and caffeine: These beverages can dehydrate you.
