New Delhi: Amid rising tensions in the Middle East, India has taken a significant decision from both humanitarian and strategic perspectives. The Indian government has granted permission to the Iranian warship IRIS Lavan to dock at Kochi Port in South India. According to officials, the warship drifted toward the Indian coast due to a technical fault. The ship's 183-member crew is being temporarily housed at Indian Navy facilities.

Participated in International Naval Event

According to sources, the IRIS Lavan arrived in the region last month to participate in an international naval event hosted by India. Following the event, the ship was on its journey, but experienced a technical problem en route, requiring safe harbor.

It is reported that Iran contacted India on February 28th, requesting permission for the ship to enter a safe harbor. The Indian government granted permission on March 1st, following which the warship arrived at Kochi Port on March 4th.

Naval Facilities Provided to Crew

The Indian Navy has provided temporary accommodation to the warship's crew at the naval complex in Kochi. According to officials, this step was taken in keeping with international maritime conventions and humanitarian considerations.

Government sources say that providing safe harbor to any country's ship in case of a technical problem at sea is part of international maritime rules.

Sri Lanka also granted asylum to Iranian warship

Meanwhile, Sri Lanka has also granted asylum to another Iranian warship, the IRIS Bushehr, in its port. According to reports, the ship had sought asylum in a Sri Lankan port after experiencing engine failure.

The ship's crew of approximately 208 members has also been temporarily housed in a naval camp. Sri Lanka's decision is also being described as a humanitarian measure.

Sinking of IRIS Dena Increases Concern

Recently, news emerged of the sinking of the Iranian frigate IRIS Dena, approximately 19 nautical miles off the coast of Sri Lanka. According to reports, approximately 87 sailors died in the accident. This incident has raised concerns about maritime security and trade in the Indian Ocean region.

Rising Tensions in the Indian Ocean Region

Experts believe that the growing tensions between Iran and the United States are now affecting the Indian Ocean region, which is considered vital for global maritime trade.

The current situation is considered sensitive for India, Sri Lanka, and other coastal countries. According to government sources, India's decision was taken in pragmatic and long-term national interests, maintaining regional stability and maritime cooperation.
