New Delhi: Pakistan’s middle-class families are facing growing financial challenges as the cost of essential needs, including electricity, water, healthcare, education and transportation continues to rise. A report highlighted that many salaried households are struggling to maintain financial stability as they increasingly depend on private services to fulfil basic requirements that are traditionally considered public responsibilities.

Shrinking Savings Leave Salaried Families Vulnerable

The financial gap for ordinary households is becoming narrower with many families finding themselves in a difficult position unable to access extensive government support, but also lacking the resources to absorb rising costs. According to official data from the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics for 2024-25, the average monthly household income stood at Rs 82,179, while average monthly consumption expenditure reached Rs 79,150. The difference of slightly over Rs 3,000 leaves families with limited protection against sudden expenses such as medical emergencies, job uncertainty, rising education costs or major household repairs.

Private Services Add Extra Pressure on Middle-Class Families

The financial strain is no longer linked only to inflation. Many households are now spending more on private alternatives due to challenges in public services. Families are increasingly turning towards private schools, private healthcare facilities and alternative water arrangements when government services fail to meet their needs. This additional spending has increased the burden on salaried households that already face rising daily expenses.

Electricity Bills Become Biggest Concern for Households

Among all expenses, electricity costs have emerged as one of the most visible pressures on Pakistan’s middle class. The country’s power sector continues to face challenges including circular debt, expensive electricity generation and distribution-related inefficiencies. Consumers have often faced higher tariffs and additional charges due to these issues.

Concerns have grown over possible electricity tariff changes linked to Pakistan’s economic programme with the International Monetary Fund (IMF), which could further increase pressure on middle-income families.

Power Costs Impact Everyday Life

For millions of households, electricity has become an unavoidable expense connected to basic daily activities. From running refrigerators and water pumps to supporting online education, remote work and protection from extreme summer temperatures, reliable electricity has become essential. Rising power costs are therefore increasingly being viewed as a wider threat to household financial security rather than just a regular monthly expense.

Pakistan’s Middle Class Faces Growing Economic Uncertainty

With income growth struggling to keep pace with rising expenses, many Pakistani families are experiencing increasing financial pressure. The situation highlights the challenges faced by a section of society that continues to contribute to the economy, but has limited financial room to manage continuous increases in essential costs.
