Crowded Ganesh Pandal Turns Tragic in Mumbai After Electrical Fault Claims Two Lives

Mumbai: A festive celebration in Mumbai’s Lalbaug area turned tragic after two people, including an eight-year-old girl and a 33-year-old woman, died due to electric shock near a Ganesh pandal on Sunday morning. Four others were injured in the incident, officials said. The accident took place near a temporary drinking water and cold drink stall set up close to the entrance of the Mahaganpati Utsav Mandal in Digvijay Mill Chawl.

Short Circuit Near Temporary Stall Causes Panic

According to officials, the incident occurred around 2:20 am on Dattaram Lad Marg in Kalachowki amid heavy crowds during the ongoing Ganesh festival. A suspected short circuit near the entrance gate caused electrical current to pass through the temporary stall, leading to multiple people suffering electric shocks. Fire brigade personnel immediately disconnected the power supply and secured the area to prevent further casualties.

Eight-Year-Old Girl Among Two Declared Dead

Six victims who suffered electric shocks were rushed to nearby hospitals. Eight-year-old Raghini Ghanshyam Yadav was declared brought dead at Masina Hospital in Byculla. Three injured victims Kiran Akbar Naik, Tanvi Naresh Hande and Sahil Sandip Tare were admitted and are reportedly in stable condition. At Global Hospital in Parel, another victim, 33-year-old Sujata, was declared dead, while 12-year-old Ruhi Singh was admitted to the ICU in critical condition.

BEST Officials Inspect Site, Investigation Underway

Officials from the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) undertaking inspected the location after the incident. During the inspection, officials found that a temporary electric meter had been installed to provide electricity for festival lighting and the cold drink stall. The wiring and miniature circuit breaker (MCB) connected to the temporary supply were disconnected by a local electrician. Power supply to parts of the area remained disconnected as authorities continued their investigation.

Police Probe Cause of Electrical Failure

Kalachowki police have launched a detailed investigation to determine the exact cause of the short circuit and identify any possible lapses linked to the temporary electrical arrangement.
