Beijing: China’s aggressive push towards Artificial Intelligence (AI) is transforming workplaces across industries, improving efficiency and productivity while raising concerns about the future of millions of jobs, especially among young workers. As Beijing accelerates AI adoption across sectors, employees in technology, logistics and service industries are increasingly facing uncertainty over how automation will impact their careers.

AI Begins Replacing Traditional Roles Across Industries

The impact of AI is becoming visible in several professions, including software development and delivery services. Beijing-based programmer Fei Zhaojun is among workers who experienced the disruption after his company explored whether AI tools could handle coding tasks previously performed by human employees. Fei was among around 160 employees affected during a workforce reduction. He said many mid-level programming roles are becoming vulnerable as AI systems continue to improve.

After losing his job, Fei moved away from the technology sector and started creating short-form videos while searching for new career opportunities.

China’s AI Adoption Expands at Record Speed

The pace of AI's integration in China has accelerated rapidly in recent years. According to market intelligence firm IDC, fewer than 10% of Chinese industrial enterprises were using AI models and agents in 2024. The number later increased sharply, with nearly half of industrial businesses adopting AI technologies. Companies are increasingly using AI to improve efficiency, reduce costs and automate routine tasks.

Robots Enter Factories, Logistics and Daily Services

China’s AI transformation is not limited to offices. Humanoid robots and automated systems are becoming part of everyday operations. Robots are being deployed in logistics facilities for tasks such as parcel sorting, while autonomous machines are being tested for traffic management and other public services.

Food delivery robots are also becoming increasingly visible in urban areas, raising concerns among workers whose livelihoods depend on delivery and service-based jobs.

Young Workers Face Growing Employment Challenges

The rise of AI comes at a difficult time for China’s youth employment market. While the overall urban unemployment rate remains around 5%, unemployment among young people aged 16 to 24 who are not studying is significantly higher.

Analysts warn that faster automation could create additional pressure for young job seekers by reducing opportunities in some traditional entry-level and mid-level roles.

AI Growth Brings Both Opportunities and Challenges

Economists believe AI can significantly improve productivity and contribute to economic growth. However, they also caution that rapid automation could create social and employment challenges if workers are not provided with new skills and alternative opportunities.

The future impact of AI will depend on how effectively economies manage the transition between traditional jobs and emerging technology-driven roles.
