Saint Petersburg: Russian President Vladimir Putin has strongly backed India's right to make independent strategic decisions, asserting that no external power can force New Delhi to alter its partnerships. Speaking at the Saint Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF), Putin praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership and emphasized that India would continue to act in accordance with its national interests.

His remarks come amid ongoing international scrutiny of India's engagement with Russia, particularly in the areas of energy and defence cooperation.

Remarks Seen in Context of India-Russia Relations

Addressing participants at the forum, Putin said attempts to pressure India over its ties with Russia are unlikely to succeed. He noted that India, as one of the world's largest nations, makes decisions based on its own priorities rather than external influence.

The Russian leader also highlighted the strength of India-Russia relations, describing New Delhi as a dependable partner. According to Putin, efforts by Western countries to isolate Moscow have not affected the longstanding cooperation between the two nations.

Defence Cooperation Remains a Key Pillar

Putin reiterated Russia's commitment to defence collaboration with India, noting that military ties between the two countries date back several decades. He stressed that bilateral defence projects would continue to be guided by mutual interests and existing commitments.

The Russian president stated that cooperation in the defence sector would remain unaffected by political pressure from third countries. His comments underscore the importance Moscow places on its strategic partnership with New Delhi.

Focus on Future Military Projects

Putin also referred to potential cooperation on advanced defence technologies, including the fifth-generation Sukhoi Su-57 fighter aircraft programme. Russia has previously expressed its willingness to collaborate with India on the project and discuss technology-sharing arrangements.

The comments come at a time when India continues to balance relationships with multiple global powers while pursuing an independent foreign policy. Putin's remarks are likely to be closely watched in diplomatic circles, particularly as geopolitical competition and strategic alliances continue to evolve across the world.
