Kozhikode:  A Singapore-flagged vessel (MV Wan Hai 503) caught fire near Beypore port, around 78 nautical miles from the coast of Beypore, around 9.30am, while en route from Colombo to Nhava Sheva Port in Mumbai, a defence spokesperson said in Kochi, reports Dynamite News correspondent.
The vessel departed Colombo, Sri Lanka with 22 crew on board on June 6, for Mumbai, with an estimated time of arrival on June 9.

Indian Coast Guard

On receipt of information, Indian Coast Guard (ICG) assets were diverted immediately and are coordinating rescue operations for the crew.
Around 12.40 pm, the resulting fire was reported to have spread to other containers and the crew abandoned the vessel and took to life rafts.
ICG Maritime Rescue coordination Centre, Mumbai, diverted MV One Marvel, which recovered 18 of the crew. Of the 18 crew rescued, including captain of the vessel, one is reported to have sustained serious injuries.

Four Crew Members Missing

Four crew members are missing, including two Taiwanese and one each from Indonesia and Myanmar and their fate is being ascertained, Coast Guard said. An ICG Dornier aircraft is maintaining the vessel for real-time assessment.
The 270-metre-long vessel is currently adrift and firefight efforts by the Indian Coast Guard have commenced to bring the situation under control. The details of the cargo onboard are being ascertained to determine the nature of fire and the potential risks involved during fire fighting operations.
The ICG Dornier aircraft continued to maintain aerial surveillance for real-time assessment of the situation.
Reports said, about 50 containers out of the total 650, reportedly fell into the sea following multiple explosions.

Navy Putting Efforts

According to the officials, the reasons for the accident have not been clearly known yet, but in the initial investigation it is feared that the explosion may have occurred due to some technical fault in the engine room of the ship. The Navy is continuously making efforts to prevent the fire from spreading to the rest of the ship.

Agencies Engaged In Investigation

Along with the Indian Navy and Coast Guard, maritime security agencies have also started investigating the incident. A team of Kochi Port Trust and marine engineering experts has also been sent to the spot.

Navy Assured People

Considering the seriousness of the incident, marine traffic has been diverted away from that area for the time being.

The search for the four missing members in the accident is going on at a war footing and the Navy has assured that the relief work will continue till the last person is found. Senior officials of the government and the Navy are constantly monitoring the situation and a detailed report is awaited.
