Islamabad: At least 11 security personnel were killed in a devastating terrorist attack in Pakistan’s northwestern Bajaur district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the Pakistani army confirmed on Tuesday.
According to the military’s media wing, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), terrorists affiliated with the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) carried out the assault on February 16 by targeting a joint security checkpoint operated by security forces and law enforcement agencies.
The attackers rammed an explosive-laden vehicle into the checkpoint’s wall, triggering a massive blast that caused part of the structure to collapse. The explosion resulted in the deaths of 11 policemen stationed at the site.
Security forces retaliated swiftly, killing 12 terrorists in a follow-up operation, including those attempting to flee the scene, the ISPR said.
The powerful explosion also damaged nearby residential buildings. An innocent girl was killed, and seven others - including women and children - sustained injuries in the blast.
Authorities have launched further operations in the area to eliminate any remaining militants and secure the region.
