New Delhi: Pakistan’s efforts to join BRICS have not yet produced the desired result, despite Islamabad showing interest in becoming part of the influential international grouping. The country has been seeking membership in the bloc, hoping it would open new avenues for trade, investment and diplomatic cooperation with emerging economies.
BRICS, originally formed by Brazil, Russia, India and China, later expanded with South Africa and has recently grown into a larger platform representing major developing economies. Several countries have joined the group in recent years, but Pakistan is still waiting for approval.
Pakistan has been actively pursuing diplomatic backing for its BRICS membership request. Its close relationship with China remains a major factor behind Islamabad’s push, while Russia has also maintained growing engagement with Pakistan in areas including energy, defence and regional cooperation.
Pakistani officials believe that joining BRICS could help the country improve economic partnerships and gain greater representation in discussions on global financial and political issues.
However, becoming a BRICS member is not a simple process. The group follows a consensus-based approach, meaning all existing members must agree before a new country is included.
India’s role is considered important in Pakistan’s BRICS membership journey. The two neighbouring countries have a complicated relationship due to decades-old disputes and security concerns.
While BRICS focuses mainly on economic cooperation and global development issues, political and strategic factors often influence decisions within international platforms. Any discussion on Pakistan’s entry is likely to involve careful consideration among all member nations.
As BRICS expands its influence in global affairs, more countries are showing interest in joining the group. Membership offers access to new economic partnerships, investment opportunities and a stronger voice in discussions on global governance.
For Pakistan, joining BRICS remains a key diplomatic objective. However, until all member countries reach an agreement, Islamabad’s long-awaited entry into the bloc continues to remain uncertain.
