New Delhi: Pope Leo XIV, head of the Catholic Church, will arrive in Algeria on Monday for a historic visit. This will be the first time a Pope will visit this Muslim-majority country. This visit is considered extremely important for interreligious dialogue and global peace.

Beginning of a four-nation African tour

Algeria is the first stop on the Pope's 11-day African tour. He will also visit Cameroon, Angola, and Equatorial Guinea during this visit, which runs from April 13 to 23. The objective of this nearly 18,000-kilometer tour is to promote peace, dialogue, and cooperation.

Emphasis on dialogue between Islam and Christianity

Algeria is 99 percent Muslim, and Islam is the state religion. Consequently, the Pope's visit will convey a message of dialogue and coexistence between Islam and Christianity. A Vatican spokesperson stated that this visit is an effort to address the challenges of peace and coexistence globally.

Meeting with the President and Visit to the Mosque

In the capital, Algiers, the Pope will meet with Abdelmadjid Tebboune and address officials. He will then visit the Grand Mosque of Algiers, one of the world's largest mosques, and meet with the local Catholic community.

Special Connection to St. Augustine

This visit is also personally significant for the Pope. Algeria is the birthplace of the great Christian theologian Saint Augustine. The Pope considers himself a follower of his disciples and will pray at his shrine in the city of Annaba.

Questions Will Be Raised on Human Rights

Although Algeria's constitution guarantees religious freedom, human rights organizations have expressed concern about restrictions on religious minorities. Several organizations have appealed to the Pope to address this issue.

Message of Peace and Coexistence

This visit is also being seen as an exercise in "soft power" and international diplomacy. The Pope's visit will send a message to the world that people of different religions and cultures can live together in peace and mutual respect.
