Moscow: Russian President Vladimir Putin has indicated that a potential route toward ending the Ukraine conflict could be based on discussions previously held with US President Donald Trump, while stressing that any agreement would depend on Ukraine agreeing to unspecified compromises.

Putin Refers to Earlier Trump Meeting

Addressing representatives of global media, Putin said Russia is willing to pursue a negotiated settlement. He pointed to a past meeting with Trump in Anchorage, saying it helped outline possible parameters for a peace framework.

He stated that Russia had already accepted certain understandings from those discussions, but the next step required Ukraine to agree to similar terms. The Russian leader, however, did not reveal details of the proposed compromises.

Claims of Military Progress

Putin also claimed that Russian forces continue to advance on several fronts in Ukraine. He said Moscow now controls the Luhansk region fully and holds large parts of Donetsk and Zaporizhzhia.

He argued that these battlefield developments strengthen Russia’s position in any future negotiations, even as combat operations continue daily.

Zelenskyy Proposes Face-to-Face Talks

In a parallel diplomatic move, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called for direct talks with Putin. In a public message, he proposed a face-to-face meeting and urged a halt in hostilities before any structured negotiations begin.

The Kremlin confirmed receipt of Zelenskyy’s communication but has not agreed to the proposed meeting format.

Questions Over Mediation and Legitimacy

Putin questioned the neutrality of European Union countries as potential mediators, accusing some of taking a strongly anti-Russia stance. Despite this, he said Moscow remains open to diplomatic engagement with European states.

He also raised concerns about Zelenskyy’s mandate, noting that his presidential term officially ended in 2024. Ukraine continues under martial law due to the ongoing war, delaying elections.

Continuing Conflict and Diplomatic Uncertainty

While the both Russia and Ukraine signal openness to dialogue, fighting continues across multiple fronts. Previous peace efforts in Geneva, Istanbul, and Abu Dhabi have failed to produce lasting results.

With no agreement on territory, security guarantees, or political conditions, the conflict remains unresolved despite renewed diplomatic signals.
