UN General Assembly President Annalena Baerbock to Visit India
New Delhi: Annalena Baerbock, President of the United Nations General Assembly, is set to visit India next week on an official trip, according to her spokesperson La Niece Collins.
The visit comes at the invitation of the Indian government. During her stay, Baerbock will hold several bilateral meetings with Indian officials. She is also expected to meet the UN team in India, led by Resident Coordinator Stefan Priesner.
This marks the second high-level UN visit to India this year, following António Guterres’ trip to New Delhi in February for the AI Impact Summit.
1st Visit As UN General Assembly President
During her earlier visits as Germany’s foreign minister, she worked to strengthen ties between the two countries and even traveled on the Delhi Metro. However, this will be her first visit in her current role as UN General Assembly President.
In a 2022 visit, she highlighted India’s growing global importance, stating that the country will play a major role in shaping the 21st-century international order, particularly in the Indo-Pacific region. She also praised India’s progress in reducing extreme poverty and emphasized the role of democracy and pluralism in driving development.
India and Germany have strengthened cooperation in areas such as mobility, innovation, and sustainability. Baerbock previously accompanied German Chancellor Olaf Scholz during his 2024 visit to India for intergovernmental consultations.
Germany is also part of the G4 group-along with India, Brazil, and Japan-which advocates for reforms in the UN Security Council, including the addition of new permanent members.
During her diplomatic engagements, Baerbock has interacted multiple times with India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar.
After completing her India visit, Baerbock is scheduled to travel to China.
