Beijing: China on Wednesday firmly denied allegations that it is providing military assistance to Iran, calling such reports “purely fabricated.” The statement comes amid heightened tensions in West Asia and growing scrutiny of global alignments in the region.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian dismissed media claims suggesting Beijing’s involvement in aiding Tehran militarily.

Report on Satellite Triggers Response

The denial follows a report by the Financial Times alleging that Iran had acquired a Chinese satellite, identified as TEE-01B, to potentially target US military bases in the region. While Beijing did not directly reference the report, it categorically rejected any suggestion of providing defence support.

The development comes at a time when geopolitical tensions are already high due to ongoing conflicts and fragile ceasefire conditions in West Asia.

Warning to the United States on Tariffs

Alongside its denial, China issued a stern warning to the United States over potential economic actions. Beijing cautioned that any tariff hikes imposed on the basis of such allegations would invite countermeasures.

Lin Jian stated that China would respond firmly if Washington proceeded with punitive trade actions linked to the Iran issue.

Trump’s 50% Tariff Threat

The warning follows remarks by US President Donald Trump, who indicated that countries found supporting Iran could face steep economic penalties. Trump specifically mentioned the possibility of imposing tariffs as high as 50 percent on China if evidence of military assistance emerges.

He also suggested alternative trade arrangements, including offering oil supplies to China, signalling a mix of economic pressure and negotiation.

China’s Balancing Act in West Asia

China has maintained a careful diplomatic stance, seeking to balance its strategic ties with Iran while projecting neutrality on the global stage. Despite international sanctions, Chinese firms have continued limited technological trade with Iran, though direct military support would mark a significant escalation.

The situation underscores increasing tensions between major global powers, with the Iran issue becoming a focal point for both strategic rivalry and economic confrontation. As developments unfold, the interplay between diplomacy, trade, and security is expected to shape the next phase of international relations.
