New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump held a nearly 40-minute phone conversation on Tuesday, against the backdrop of escalating tensions in West Asia.
The discussion came shortly after the collapse of high-level talks between the United States and Iran in Islamabad, which had aimed to stabilise the region.
Negotiations should resume quickly: French President Macron urges US, Iran to restart talks
This was the third interaction between the two leaders in 2026 and the second since tensions intensified following US and Israeli strikes on Iran in late February.
Earlier calls between the leaders focused on bilateral cooperation, including progress on a proposed trade agreement, as well as regional developments.
The latest diplomatic engagement follows nearly 21 hours of direct negotiations between the US and Iran in Islamabad. The talks concluded without an agreement, casting uncertainty over a fragile ceasefire that had been in place for the past two weeks.
Officials from both sides blamed each other for the deadlock, highlighting persistent differences on key issues.
According to US officials, the talks stalled due to Iran’s reluctance to commit to abandoning its nuclear programme. US Vice President JD Vance said Washington requires clear assurances that Tehran will not pursue nuclear weapons capability.
On the other hand, Iranian representatives said trust remains a central issue, with parliamentary speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf stating that the responsibility now lies with the United States to rebuild confidence.
The failure of the negotiations has added to concerns about stability in West Asia, particularly amid ongoing tensions and the risk of further escalation.
Diplomatic efforts continue at multiple levels as global stakeholders seek to prevent a breakdown of the ceasefire and encourage renewed dialogue.
The conversation between Modi and Trump reflects ongoing coordination between India and the United States on regional and global issues. While details of the discussion were not fully disclosed, the call underscores the importance both sides attach to developments in West Asia.
