New Delhi: It is rare in judiciary decisions that a High Court judge is transferred twice in a row within a month. But such an extraordinary case has come to light with Justice Arun Monga. The Supreme Court Collegium first recommended him to be sent from the Rajasthan High Court to the Delhi High Court and within a month has decided to transfer him back to the Rajasthan High Court.
Timeline of transfer
This unique decision was taken after the Collegium meetings held on August 25 and 26, 2025. Surprisingly, Justice Monga was recently sworn in to the Delhi High Court along with five other judges on July 21, 2025. This means that his tenure in Delhi lasted less than a month, after which he was again recommended to be sent to his previous High Court.
Inspiring journey of Justice Monga
Justice Arun Monga's judicial career has been quite inspiring. He had his early education in Punjab, and his father was also a judicial officer, from whom he inherited a legal background.
He graduated in science from DAV College, Chandigarh, and then got a law degree from Punjab University. Interestingly, during his studies, he also used to teach chemistry in a school in Chandigarh.

He started practicing law in 1991 and moved to Delhi in 1997-98, where he practiced law for about 20 years. In October 2018, he was appointed a judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court and was later transferred to the Rajasthan High Court on November 1, 2023.
Possible reasons for repeated transfer
The biggest question that arises is why Justice Monga was recommended to be transferred twice in the same month. No official and public reason has been given by the Collegium for this change.
However, according to some sources, it is being said that Justice Monga himself had expressed his desire to work back in Rajasthan instead of Delhi, which was accepted by the Collegium. Still, there is no official confirmation of this, due to which the situation remains mysterious.
Transfer of another judge
Apart from Justice Monga, the Collegium has recommended the transfer of another judge. Justice Tara Vitasta Ganjoo, who is currently a judge of the Delhi High Court and was promoted in 2022, has now been recommended to be sent to the Karnataka High Court. This shows that the Collegium is considering the allocation of judges on a wide scale in the judiciary.
