Kolkata: Earthquake tremors were felt in Kolkata and several districts of West Bengal on Friday morning. People on social media reported that the tremors lasted for a few seconds, and many described them as "quite powerful." Some users wrote that entire buildings shook, while others shared videos of objects shaking in their homes.

5.2 magnitude earthquake in Dhaka

According to reports, the earthquake struck Bangladesh, measuring 5.2 in magnitude. According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), the epicenter was in Dhaka's Ghorasal area and its depth was 10 kilometers. Since the epicenter was in the border region, its effects were felt in West Bengal as well.

Tremors felt in several districts

The areas of West Bengal where the tremors were felt include Kolkata, Malda, Nadia, Cooch Behar, and other surrounding districts. People reported that the earthquake occurred between 10:08 and 10:10 am, and the sudden tremor forced many people out of their homes.

Tremors felt in Northeast India

In addition to Bangladesh and West Bengal, the earthquake was felt in many parts of Northeast India. Mild tremors were also recorded in some areas of Assam, Tripura, and Meghalaya. However, no damage has been reported.

Users shared videos on social media

Immediately after the earthquake, people began posting their reactions on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter). One user wrote, "That earthquake lasted over 30 seconds and was very powerful." Another said, "This is the most terrifying earthquake I have ever felt." Many people posted videos of objects shaking in their homes—such as lamps, bottles, and furniture—which went viral within minutes.

Administration monitoring the situation

Following the earthquake, the administration has instructed the Relief and Disaster Management Department to remain alert. However, no damage has been reported yet. According to experts, an earthquake of magnitude 5.2 is considered moderate, but since the epicenter is shallow, its impact can be felt over a wide area.
