New Delhi: The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has announced a special operating schedule for November 8, on account of Diwali. The revised timetable takes into account the festive evening schedule, passenger convenience and operational requirements during one of the busiest festival periods in the national capital.
Under the revised arrangement, the last Metro train service across all corridors, including the Airport Express Line, will commence from the respective terminal stations at 10 PM. This represents a one-hour advancement from the regular Sunday departure schedule, under which the final services generally leave terminal stations at 11 PM.
The revised departure time will apply across the entire Delhi Metro network. Consequently, passengers travelling to residential neighbourhoods, commercial districts, railway stations, transport hubs and the airport should account for the earlier closure while planning their journeys. The DMRC has advised commuters to complete their Metro journeys within the revised operating window to avoid last-minute inconvenience.
While evening services will conclude earlier, the DMRC has introduced an early-morning operational schedule on three corridors to facilitate passengers travelling on Diwali. The Pink Line, Magenta Line and Grey Line will begin operations at 6 AM from their respective terminal stations, instead of the usual Sunday commencement time of 7 AM.
The Pink Line, operating between Majlis Park and Shiv Vihar, will provide early connectivity across several important residential and commercial areas of Delhi. The Magenta Line will also commence services an hour earlier. The revised arrangement covers its Botanical Garden-Krishna Park Extension and Majlis Park-Deepali Chowk sections.
On the Grey Line, which connects Dwarka with Dhansa Bus Stand, train operations will similarly begin at 6 AM. The early commencement is intended to provide additional travel flexibility to passengers who need to undertake morning journeys before the day's festive activities begin.
The key operational change concerns the departure of the final trains from terminal stations across the network. Passengers should remember that the 10 PM deadline refers to the departure of the last train from the originating terminal stations, not necessarily the arrival time at every intermediate station. The actual time at which a train reaches a particular station will depend on its route and direction of travel.
Commuters travelling through interchange stations should also factor in the time required for transfers between corridors. Those planning airport journeys through the Airport Express Line should pay particular attention to the revised schedule.
The three early-starting corridors will offer additional morning travel time, but passengers using other Metro lines should follow the regular Sunday commencement schedule unless DMRC announces further changes.
Diwali is among India's most widely celebrated festivals, with families undertaking shopping trips, visiting relatives, attending religious ceremonies and participating in neighbourhood celebrations.
Delhi and the National Capital Region witness considerable passenger movement during the festive period, particularly around major commercial centres, residential markets and transport interchange points. The revised timetable is designed to accommodate morning travel requirements while allowing Metro operations to conclude earlier in the evening.
The decision also takes into consideration the operational and security arrangements associated with large-scale festival celebrations. An earlier closure provides additional time for the completion of train operations and associated arrangements during the evening. For commuters, however, the most important implication is the need to avoid relying on the usual 11 PM last-train schedule.
Anuj Dayal, Chief Executive Director of the DMRC's Corporate Communications department, has appealed to passengers to plan their journeys in accordance with the revised timetable. The Metro corporation has also advised commuters to consult its official website, delhimetrorail.com, and verified social media handles for additional information and any subsequent operational updates.
Passengers are encouraged to check the latest service information before leaving home, particularly if their journeys involve multiple Metro corridors or late-evening connections. The revised schedule is especially relevant for passengers returning from festive gatherings, shopping destinations and social events, as the earlier final departure could affect their onward travel arrangements.
Separately, the DMRC has increased train operations on weekdays following the implementation of Stage I of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP-I) in Delhi-NCR. Under the enhanced operational arrangement, the Metro corporation is running 20 additional train trips from Monday to Friday across its network.
The move is aimed at encouraging greater reliance on public transportation and reducing dependence on private vehicles amid deteriorating air quality in the national capital. With vehicular emissions contributing to urban air pollution, expanding Metro services is an important component of efforts to promote cleaner and more sustainable mobility.
The additional trips are expected to improve service availability, accommodate passenger demand and provide commuters with more opportunities to choose public transport over private vehicles. The weekday augmentation is separate from the special Diwali timetable announced for November 8.
